A srong support system?

Houston we have a problem; the organelle that is supposedly our “support system” is letting us down. They are letting in diseases that are ultimately killing us off. Cytoskeleton protein abnormalities are the main reason for many pathological phenotypes. Many diseases are related with irregularities in cytoskeletal proteins. These diseases include a number of cardiovascular disease syndromes, neurogeneration, cancer, liver cirrhosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and blistering skin diseases. The mechanisms that many micro-organisms infect certain cells have been proved to depend on host cytoskeletal elements. Turns out the cytoskeleton isn’t quite as strong as they thought they were.

Nucleus it's your turn now

As most of us know, the nucleus is the location of the genes in all of eukaryotic cells. Although genes are a beautiful part of the cell/nucleus, when a genetic mutation occurs it is almost never a pretty site. Diseases and conditions such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, Revesz Syndrome, Teacher Collins Syndrome and many more are only the start of the list of problems that can occur from mutations in genes.

Conditions that derive from genetic mutations usually result in physical, intellectual, developmental, and medical issues. They can cause major road blocks to living an everyday normal life.

Just be careful when deciding to give your vote to the nucleus, when genetic mutations are found in DNA whose home is… the nucleus. Can we really put our trust in them?

More diseases... are we surprised?

Good morning my favorite readers! Time to share with you my latest bit of research; recently I have been researching our local endoplasmic reticulum… and boy do they have some dirt to be shared about them.

So first some background info: proteins synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are properly folded with the assistance of ER chaperones. Misfolded proteins are rid of by ER- associated protein degradation (ERAD). But when the number of unfolded proteins exceeds the folding ability of the ER, human cells activate a defense mechanism called the ER stress response. A malfunction of the ER stress response caused by aging, genetic mutations, or environmental factors can result in various diseases like diabetes, inflammation, and disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and bipolar disorder. Eeeeek doesn’t sound too good to me… :$ Better be careful! We don't want to stress out the ER too much.... look what could happen to us if we do ^^^ Word of advice, why don't we just leave them out of this whole Organelle in Chief election thing. I have a feeling it'd stress them out and lead to the destruction of us all. And we wouldn't want that, now would we...?

And you thought the mitochondria was bad....

If you are still contemplating whether to give your vote to the Golgi Body or to the Lysosome (which I don't know why you would be having troubles deciding), but if you are, you will want to read this!

The Lysosome has this terrible habit of deciding to not do it's job and leaves things partially undigested or completely undigested at all! (obviously not a very reliable organelle to be voting for) Like hello, do your job. All you have to do is eat stuff while the rest of us work, but that's beside the point.

So, when the lysosome decides to not work something called the Lysosomal Storage Disease (LSD) forms. This ultimately results in cellular dysfunction including the nervous system, connective tissue and others.

Wastes that are collected in the lysosomes of the cells will disrupt the cell functions. “When this disease manifests, it will result in developmental delay, movement disorders, seizures, dementia, deafness and blindness, among other signs,” said Kuala Lumpur Hospital's Dr. LH Ngu. He also said it takes longer for an adult to show signs of LSD but they are still not safe from the severity of the disorder. As the disease sometimes progresses slowly and outward signs are easily overlooked. “And because of all that, crucial treatment time is lost,” Dr. Lock explained.

LSD effects can begin even before birth and it can be so severe that young patients normally do not survive. Some succumb at a very early age. Patients have to endure lengthy hospital stays and varying treatment courses. Sadly, there is no known cure available for LSD and the patient eventually faces digression, losing the ability to walk and to talk. “The face of a LSD patient gets coarse eventually. They look older than they are supposed to, their eyes become cloudy and a small rash breaks out at the umbilical area. Some contract Pompe disease. “This is when their heart gets enlarged and they develop a floppy body structure,” Dr Ngu explained.

As you can tell, LSD is a very serious matter, that all begins with the lysosome being lazy and failing to do its job.

If I were, I wouldn’t want to vote for someone who is going to let us all down and end up killing all of us…

Look at them, so small and inconspicuous... really they are a threat to us all.

ATTENTION ALL MITOCHONDRIA SUPPORTERS!!!

You really think you want to vote for the Mitochondria as the Organelle in Cheif? Well I've done my research, and I now know that Mitichondria is no where near the running in my mind. The Mitochondria has caused many problems due to it's inability to maintain focus and not mess up. Allow me to let you in on some commonly known knowledge before you decide to give them your precious vote...

Due to single mitochondrial DNA deletions, a person can be infected with Pearson Syndrome, which includes bone marrow and pancreas disfunction. Pearson marrow-pancreas syndrome is a severe disorder that commonly begins in infancy. It creates problems with the development of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow that have the potential to develop into different types of blood cells. For this reason, Pearson marrow-pancreas syndrome is considered a bone marrow failure disorder. Functions of the pancreas and other organs can also be affected.

This syndrom also effects the pancreas in a negative way, and causes it to not function as well as it should. The pancreas normally produces and releases enzymes that aid in the digestion of fats and proteins. Reduced function of this organ can lead to high levels of fats in the liver. The pancreas also releases insulin, which helps maintain correct blood sugar levels. A small number of individuals with Pearson syndrome develop diabetes, a condition that includes abnormally high blood sugar levels that can be caused by a shortage of insulin. In addition, affected individuals may have scarring in the pancreas.

People with Pearson syndrome also have a reduced ability to absorb nutrients from their diet. Most infants affected by this have an inability to grow and gain weight at the expected rate (failure to thrive). Another common occurrence in people with this condition is buildup in the body of a chemical called lactic acid, which can be life-threatening. In addition, liver and kidney problems can develop in people with this condition.

As you can now see, when the Mitichondria messes up, IT IS NOT GOOD, and that was only one example of what can happen when it fails to function properly.

Not as cool as it looks, am I right??

Consider yourselves warned...
